- Published 10 May 2008
The Pittsburgh Tribune Review has published an article on the science behind holding your breath and how David conquered the breaking point of 2 minutes for a normal human. “The reason most people can't hold their breath for more than two minutes is because there are sensors in our lungs that detect the rising carbon-dioxide level”
The article further talks about the training David went through to accomplish his feat, and again the biology behind the training.

DAVID SHATTERS WORLD RECORD
- Published 30 April 2008
David Blaine set a new world record today on the Oprah Winfrey Show LIVE when he held his breath underwater for 17 minutes and four seconds.
Guinness Book of Records official Stuart Claxton was at the show, Blaine climbed into a water-filled sphere to beat the record set by a Swiss man in February 2008.
As you all know it wasn't the first time Blaine had attempted to set a breath-holding record - he had to be rescued by divers after seven minutes during a similar stunt in 2006, which came after he spent a week living underwater.
But this time Blaine trained with the world's best free divers and embarked on a rigorous air-deprivation and work-out programme to build his red blood cell count and train his body to cope with a lack of oxygen.
David remained underwater for 17 minutes and four seconds, beating the previous record - set on February 10th by Swiss Peter Colat - by 32 seconds.
""I actually started to doubt I was going to make it because I'd never done it with such a high heart rate," he added."
Whats Next? His next death-defying feat will be to attempt to stay awake for longer than any other person - over 11 days: "That would be a million seconds, that's the goal."
BLAINE'S GLASS EATING TRICK
- Published 24 April 2008
Blaine stunned onlookers at a New York restaurant by smashing a glass - and proceeding to eat it piece by piece.
He was recently out dining with a group of friends, including professional poker player Phil Ivey, at the Tao eaterie, when Ivey asked Blaine to provide some unusual entertainment - in return for $10,000 (GBP5,000).
A source tells the New York Daily News, "David was doing a bunch of tricks, but Phil wanted to see something spectacular. He offered David $10,000 to eat a glass from the table."
So Blaine broke a large glass and then ate every shard, much to the horror of fellow diners.
And the star's representative confirmed that the stunt was genuine, saying, "This did happen and was completely real."
BLAINE'S NEW STUNT UNVEILED
- Published 24 April 2008
David has unveiled plans for his next death-defying stunt - holding his breath underwater for more than 16 minutes.
Blaine will now try his hand at going underwater without oxygen in a bid to break the Guinness World Record of 16 minutes and 14 seconds.
Blaine will perform the stunt on 30 April 2008 LIVE on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
