The Pittsburgh Tribune Review has published an article on the science behind holding your breath and how David conquered the breaking point of 2 minutes for a normal human. “The reason most people can't hold their breath for more than two minutes is because there are sensors in our lungs that detect the rising carbon-dioxide level”
The article further talks about the training David went through to accomplish his feat, and again the biology behind the training.

Within the article titled "Q & A: Talking with David Blaine" they ask him about his past stunts, and which were his favorite. The training behind his ordeals.
Blaine states that he would like to be remembered "as a guy who brought magic to the people [and] pushed the boundaries of wonder."
And for his next stunt he states that "I'm going to go 11.57 days without sleep, which is 1 million seconds, or 16,666 minutes. Everyone can help keep me awake. I won't use stimulants. I think that defeats the whole purpose."
